Step One.
STEP ONE: PreK – 1ST GRADE
Step one is an adventure in early childhood education taking place on the first Saturday of the month. The purpose of Step One is to help practice fine motor skills and introduce young learners to interpreting visual language. Each session will start off with a reading from a children’s book followed by a guided crafting activity that utilizes the story as inspiration. Projects are developed for children ages 3 to 6. A guardian must attend with each child.
September 12: Step One – Shape Sculpture

Young artists will explore geometric shapes through a fun sculpture project to build confidence in shape recognition. We will start class by reading “Alfred the Ape knows his Shapes” by Cassie Stephens. We will then make our own shapes out of paper to build an interactive sculpture. This lesson focuses on developing fine motor skills and shape recognition.
October 3: Step One – Impressionist Pumpkins
10:00 – 11:00am OR 1:00-2:00pm | Ages 3 – 6 | $10/$8 Member (per child)
Students will create vibrant pumpkins, inspired by Van Gogh, while learning about line, texture, and overlapping painting techniques. We will begin class by reading “Meet Vincent van Gogh (Meet the Artist)” by Patricia Geis. We will then apply what we learned about lines and texture in a seasonally themed pumpkin drawing.
November 7: Step One – Leaf Textures
10:00 – 11:00am OR 1:00-2:00pm | Ages 3 – 6 | $10/$8 Member (per child)
Students will celebrate the colors of fall by creating textured leaf rubbings, exploring warm colors in art, overlapping layers, and texture-making techniques. Class will start by reading Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert to activate our imagination before starting our projects. Artists will practice fine motor skills while making textures, drawing, and cutting.
December 5: Step One – Winter Watercolor
10:00 – 11:00am OR 1:00-2:00pm | Ages 3 – 6 | $10/$8 Member (per child)
Artists will create beautiful winter tree paintings inspired by folk art, experimenting with watercolor techniques and patterns. Class will begin by reading a short children’s book, followed by a presentation introducing folk art. Students will then utilize these new ideas to create their own winter landscape.
